Counselors¡¯ Experience of Divorce Therapy

Choi Youn-Shil
Abstract
This study used survey data to examine the incorporation of divorce therapy into family treatment by agency-based counselors. The counselors were given a questionnaire, developed from previous research, that classified treatment into three stages: 1) Considering Divorce; 2) Restructuring and Progression of Divorce, and 3) Adaptation After Divorce. The research found that most counselors¡¯ attitudes toward divorce changed over time, from negativity to acceptance. Counselors tended to hold more telephone counseling sessions per year than face-to-face consultations. The major reasons for divorce counseling were extramarital affairs and domestic violence. Most often, the wives initiated contact with a counselor at the Considering Divorce stage. Counselors¡¯ learning environment and supervision experiences influenced their intentions for future use of divorce therapy.
